A safe place to ask questions
and explore what we believe.
Safe Haven
A private space for curious Christians.
A place in The Living Room to explore questions about faith and what we believe—questions about God, Jesus, the Bible, theology, doubt, and more.
A place to bring what you're wondering about, curious about, sometimes unsure of or wrestling with, or even afraid to ask.
A place where we can explore, have honest conversations, and learn together—graciously and without fear of judgment.
A place to experience acceptance, grace, and maybe even a little relief:
“I've always wondered about that. Can we talk about it?”
Yes, we can.
And to discover how good it can feel to finally have a place where we can.
Maybe you're not questioning your own faith at all.
Maybe you're simply curious about things you've been taught.
Maybe you're watching someone you care about question, deconstruct, or even leave Christianity and wondering what's going on.
Maybe you're examining beliefs you've held for years and wondering whether you still believe them.
Or maybe you love Jesus and are wondering whether some of what you've been taught about Christianity could get in the way of following him.
Whatever brings you here, we can be courageous enough to look.
We're free to question what we've been taught—not for the sake of questioning, but because our questions can help us keep discovering what it means to follow the way of Jesus.
What if some of our questions could lead us closer to Jesus, rather than farther away?
One important thing to know: Safe Haven is for people who are open to exploring.
Our conversations may challenge or clarify familiar ways of understanding the Christian faith, open us to something new, or deepen what we already believe.
The goal isn't to tear down anyone's faith or convince anyone what to believe. That's why participation is by request or invitation, with a brief conversation beforehand.
Curious?

Have you ever wondered...
Why do we believe what we believe? Is that really what Jesus taught? What is prayer, really? What have I always wondered? Why do Christians believe such different things? Would a loving God really send people to hell? What if there's another way of understanding it? What does it mean to be made in the image of God? Does the Bible actually say that? Can I love Jesus and question this? What did Jesus think was most important? Why have I never heard this before? What does salvation actually mean? Are human beings really totally depraved? What am I not sure about anymore? What does Jesus show us about what God is really like? Why are so many people leaving the church? Is God really angry with us? What did Jesus actually teach? What have I simply accepted without ever really thinking about it? Can I still love Jesus and have these questions? Does God actually speak to us? Did God punish Jesus instead of us? What do I believe? Why do I believe it? What does it actually mean to be a Christian? What if what I've been taught isn't the only faithful way to understand this? What does it mean to have faith? What did Jesus mean by the Kingdom of God? Is that really what the Bible says? Does questioning this mean I'm a bad Christian? What does God really think about sacrifice? Why are people I care about questioning or leaving their faith? What is sin? Have Christians always believed this? Where is God when I can't feel God? Why did Jesus have to die? What have I been afraid to ask? What is God really like? Can I question what I believe and still love Jesus? Does God punish people? Why did Jesus spend so much time with people religion pushed aside? What are people questioning that I may never have considered? Is believing the right things what Christianity is ultimately about? What if I looked at this again with fresh eyes? Did the Father really need Jesus to die in order to forgive us? What does it mean to love God? What would happen if I looked at this differently? What did Jesus seem to believe about people? What have I wondered about but never felt comfortable asking? What do we do when parts of the Bible seem to contradict each other? I don't know if I believe that anymore. Is that okay? Can God's love ultimately fail? Why have Christians sometimes been so certain about things Christians now reject? What else might there be to discover? Do Christians have to believe that? What does abundant life actually look like? Does everything in the Bible reflect God's heart equally? What are they seeing or asking that I may never have considered? Are we born sinful? What does Jesus actually want us to do with our lives? Does God ever use violence? What does it mean to say that God is love? Why are people who once loved their faith saying they can't believe it anymore? What did Jesus seem to get most angry about? What is the Bible—and what isn't it? What happens to people who don't believe? What if people think I've lost my faith? Are there things I believe simply because I've always been told to believe them? What does Jesus actually want us to do? Did the Father kill his Son? What does sacrifice mean in the Bible? Can I take the Bible seriously without taking every passage literally? What might I discover about God that I haven't seen before? What does it actually mean to follow Jesus? Do I have to believe that to be a Christian? Why are there thousands of Christian denominations? What did Jesus think mattered most? Is God primarily loving—or does God's love have limits? What did Jesus actually say? What do we do with violence attributed to God in the Bible? I can't say this at church. What will people think of me? What might I learn by listening before trying to answer? What did Jesus' death actually accomplish? Does God see something good in us even when we don't? What is it about Christianity or the church that some people can no longer accept? Is it okay to say I don't know? What does the Bible really teach about hell? Can someone leave church without leaving God? What might happen if I looked at this again with fresh eyes? How did Jesus read Scripture? Can I question something I've always believed and still have faith? Does the Bible teach eternal conscious torment? I've never thought about that before. What does it mean? What do I really believe—and why? What does Jesus want from us? What does it actually mean to love our enemies? Have Christians always believed the same thing about hell? Could there be more than one faithful way of understanding this? What might I discover about Jesus that I haven't seen before? I just can't seem to believe that anymore. What does forgiveness really mean? Why do we believe that? What would it actually mean to take Jesus seriously? Is it okay to admit that something I've been taught doesn't make sense to me? Are there other Christian ways of understanding the cross? What are we supposed to do when our experience doesn't seem to match what we've been taught about God? I don't necessarily agree, but can I understand where they're coming from? What questions don't I even know to ask yet? Can we actually talk about this? I've always wondered about that. Can we talk about it? Etc., etc., etc.
No, we probably won't answer all of these in Safe Haven—at least not in our first gathering. 🙂 We may not even answer some of them. But we can wonder about some of them together—and talk about the ones you might be wondering about.
