More Counseling Details

Counseling with me is simple, hopeful, and different — and this story about a river might help to explain why.

A Moment With the River

It was many years ago on the New River in West Virginia, on one of our high school youth trips…

A river guide said something wise:

“Every river has deep currents that can pull you under… and calm places meant for floating.”

In rafting, there are sections where a deep current grabs you — the kind that suck you under — and you have to paddle hard just to escape.

And there are places where the water becomes calm — where you can lean back, breathe, and rest… or even get out and float for a while.

Isn’t that a lot like our inner world?

Sometimes you’re caught in a deeper current you didn’t see coming — something inside you you can’t always name or explain.

And sometimes you’re in calmer waters — steadier, clearer, more peaceful — the place you wish you could live from more often.

It may not be a perfect metaphor, but it gives you a glimpse of what working with me is like.

What This Has to Do With Counseling

Sometimes something from the past — a wound, a memory, a shock, or something you can’t even identify — pulls you under like a deeper current.
That’s the suck.

And sometimes you feel good again — floating, steady, breathing easier, with a clearer and quieter mind.
That’s the calmer water — the place you want to live from more often.

The “suck” is whatever pulls you under.
The calmer waters are where your clarity and peace are already waiting.

Deeper Work (Getting Unstuck)

This is where I help you get free from the emotional undercurrents that keep pulling you down — often things you can’t see or explain.

You don’t have to relive trauma.
You don’t have to retell painful memories.
You don’t need years of therapy.

You just need to get free from what’s been pulling you under.

I already use simple, deeper-level approaches that help people get unstuck quickly — and I’m currently training in an even more refined version of that work.

👉 If you’d like to support that training — so that you (and your family) can benefit in a special way when it’s ready — you can learn more here → (coming soon)

Everyday Insight (Living Clear & Free)

This is where you discover your built-in calmer waters — the innate mental health God already placed within you — and begin understanding how your mind actually works.

So you can live:

✔ clearer and freer
✔ less tangled in your thoughts
✔ steadier inside
✔ far less afraid of your own experience

This is not about effort or trying harder.
Not about applying more spiritual principles.
It’s about understanding — and understanding changes everything.

FAQ's

Here are some simple answers to the questions people often ask.

1. What kind of counseling is this?

It’s a spiritually-grounded, psychologically wise approach that helps you heal and understand yourself.
Not “Bible-verse prescriptions,” and not clinical talk therapy — but a way of seeing how God designed the mind and soul to work together.
All truth is God’s truth.

And real change comes from insight, not effort.

I integrate two simple, gentle approaches — one that helps you get free from what’s been pulling you under (MEM), and one that helps you understand your innate mental health (3 Principles). You don’t even need to study or understand the modalities — simply know they work together to help you find clarity, freedom, and peace.

These two approaches work together — helping you get free and helping you understand how your mind works so you can live clear, steady, and free.

2. Is this like regular therapy?

No.

You don’t have to talk endlessly about your problems.
You don’t have to relive pain.
You don’t have to “work harder.”
This isn’t about digging — it’s about discovering.
You don’t need years of work — just the right kind of clarity.

Sessions are directive, educational, and conversational — lighter than people expect, with more “aha’s” and fewer “oh-no’s,” more clarity and less Kleenex

3. Do I have to relive trauma?

No.

You do not have to retell or re-experience painful memories.
There are gentle, effective ways to free you from the "deeper currents" without going back through everything.

4. Will this actually help?

Most people come to me after traditional therapy hasn’t gotten them where they hoped.
A different way is needed — and this might be that different way.

When you get unstuck at the deeper level and understand how your mind works, things begin to shift.
Most people have tried what isn’t working — you’re not the problem.

5. How long does it take?

This is short-term work.
Trauma or "stuckness" often shifts in 1–2 sessions.
Understanding and insight typically take about 6 sessions.
My goal isn't to keep you in counseling — but to help you get your life back and get into the flow of life again.

6. Will this be hard?

No — not in the way people fear.
You don’t have to brace yourself for emotional overwhelm.
You don’t have to “work hard” to get better — and that surprises most people.
We look toward the solution, not the problem.

And honestly?
The hard part isn’t your job — it’s mine.
My role is to guide the process with care and skill.
Your role is simply willingness — openness, curiosity, and a desire for things to be different.

If it helps, here’s a picture:

A major FedEx hub once shut down when every conveyor belt failed.
Technicians tried everything. Nothing worked.
They finally called in a retired specialist.
He arrived, opened a single panel, turned one screw —
and the entire system roared back to life.

The invoice?
$1 for turning the screw.
$9,999 for knowing where to look and what to do.

That’s a little like this work.
Not pressure on you — and not pressure on me to be perfect —
but a reminder that knowing where to look and what to do (and not do) can begin to change everything.

And the experience?
People often feel relieved… clearer… more like themselves again.

This work tends to be more hopeful, more helpful, more freeing, and far more grace-filled than most people ever expect therapy to be.

7. What does it cost?

Sessions are $180.

Individual counseling is for people who want more care, attention, love, guidance and availability from me through the process.

This is short-term work — and it often leads to lasting change.

If cost becomes a true barrier, we’ll work something out.
A sliding scale is available in special circumstances.

8. Is there anything else I should know?

Yes — and it’s encouraging.

First, when it comes to getting unstuck, this isn’t your father’s kind of therapy.

It’s different. Sometimes it works more quickly than people expect.
I’m not promising miracles — but it’s good to stay open to the possibility.

Second, the truths I’ll share with you about living more clear and free may feel unusual at first:

  • they may sound the opposite of what you’ve been taught about mental health

  • they may seem too simple

  • they may even seem too good to be true

But often the things God makes simple are the things that help us most.

So what does this require of you?

Not effort — just a little willingness:

  • a willingness to consider something new

  • a willingness to unlearn what hasn’t helped

  • a willingness to rediscover something true that’s been in you all along

If that sounds like you — open, curious, and maybe even a little adventurous — this work might be a very good fit.

9. Who is this NOT for? (gently said)

This approach is probably not the best match for someone who is:

  • wanting to stay in old patterns

  • committed to the belief that change is impossible

  • wanting years of traditional weekly talk therapy

  • wanting to stay focused on the problem rather than the solution

  • wanting techniques, homework, worksheets or steps

  • wanting to relive trauma in detail

  • wanting to stay in the story of their suffering

This isn’t “white-knuckle, try-harder” counseling.
It isn’t endless digging into your pain, your past or your problems.

It is for people who feel even a small spark of willingness —
the tiniest opening —
and are ready for something different.

If that’s you… this may be a beautiful fit.
And remember — you don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to be willing.

10. What are the next steps?

1. Read through this page — especially who this work is for.

2. Schedule a brief consultation so we can talk, discern fit, and answer questions.

3. If it feels right, we begin weekly sessions — or a short intensive if that fits you better.

4. If individual counseling isn’t financially possible right now, the Made Mentally Well course (live or evergreen) is a good place to start.

A Closing Word

What do you notice in your heart right now?
A spark? A pull? A little hope?

If the feeling is good, it’s often God — whispering through your own thoughts and feelings.

You might be asking yourself:
“Is now the time?”

Well… why not?
Maybe this is “for such a time as this.”
