Depression is more than sadness. It’s a heavy fog that lingers, sometimes making it hard to get out of bed or enjoy things you once loved. Many Christians silently wonder, “If I love God, why do I still feel this way?”
I’ve walked through depression myself. I prayed, went to therapy, read Scripture — but sometimes the heaviness still remained. What I discovered later changed everything: depression does not mean your faith is broken, and it does not mean you are broken.
Depression convinces us that this heavy state is permanent. But feelings, like the weather, shift and pass. As Michael Neill says: “You’re never more than one thought away from a whole new experience of life.” Depression may whisper, “This is forever,” but God’s truth says otherwise.
The Psalms are full of raw honesty: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?” (Psalm 42:5). God included these laments in Scripture to show us that faith and depression can coexist. Even in the valley, His presence is real.
Isaiah 41:10 says: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” Depression doesn’t disqualify you from God’s love — it’s often the very place you discover it most deeply.
Tell God exactly how you feel. There’s no need to hide your tears.
Depression isolates, but healing often begins in connection. Talk to a trusted friend, pastor, or counselor.
Write down verses of hope and place them where you’ll see them daily. Even one word — “I am with you” — can be an anchor.
At your core, you are not broken. Depression clouds the view, but beneath it lies the steady truth of God’s peace. Just as the sun remains behind the clouds, your God-given well-being is still there.
What story do I tell myself when depression feels heavy?
How might I remind myself that feelings are temporary?
Who could I safely share my struggles with this week?
Depression doesn’t define you. You are God’s beloved, and peace is still possible. That’s why I created Made Mentally Well — to help Christians discover how God designed their minds for wholeness and hope.
